The Armenian Language

Armenian is an Indo-European language and the sole member of the independent branch of the Armenian language family. It is the native language of the Armenian people and the official language of Armenia. Historically spoken in the Armenian highlands, today Armenian is also widely spoken throughout the Armenian diaspora. The estimated number of Armenian speakers worldwide is between five and seven million.

  1. Armenian has its own independent branch in the Indo-European family, unrelated to other languages in the region like Georgian or Azeri.
  2. Armenian uses its own unique alphabet, created in 405 AD by Mesrop Mashtots, consisting of 39 letters.
  3. The Armenian language has been spoken in the region for more than 2,500 years and has a rich literary tradition.
  4. Classical Armenian, known as Grabar, was the written and liturgical language for centuries and is still used in religious services today.
  5. Modern Armenian has two main dialects: Eastern Armenian (spoken in Armenia and Iran) and Western Armenian (spoken by the diaspora).

About Melbourne
Melbourne

Melbourne is the capital and most populous city in the state of Victoria, and the second most populous city in Australia. The Melbourne City Centre is the hub of the greater metropolitan area and the Census statistical division—of which "Melbourne" is the common name. As of June 2010, the greater geographical area had an approximate population of four million. Inhabitants of Melbourne are called Melburnians or Melbournians.

The metropolis is located on the large natural bay known as Port Phillip, with the city centre positioned at the estuary of the Yarra River (at the northernmost point of the bay). The metropolitan area then extends south from the city centre, along the eastern and western shorelines of Port Phillip, and expands into the hinterland. The city centre is situated in the municipality known as the City of Melbourne, and the metropolitan area consists of a further 30 municipalities.
