Lingala (or Ngala, Lingala: Lingála) is a Bantu language spoken in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the northern half of the Republic of the Congo, in their capitals, Kinshasa and Brazzaville, and to a lesser degree in Angola, the Central African Republic, Kenya and southern South Sudan. Lingala has 20 million native speakers and about another 20 million second-language speakers, for an approximate total of 40 million speakers.
- Lingala is a Bantu language spoken primarily in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Republic of the Congo.
- It is one of the four national languages of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and is widely used in urban areas, especially in Kinshasa.
- Lingala has two forms: a formal, standardised version used in media and education, and a more informal, colloquial version used in daily conversation.
- The language was heavily influenced by missionaries and colonial administrators, who helped spread its use.
- Lingala is the primary language of Congolese popular music, including soukous, which has international recognition.
